Definition: to move back or to not become involved in order to stop a fight or an argument.

E.g.1: Back off! This is none of your business.
E.g.2: Tim and Tome were ready to fight when there was a shout of “No” from the crowd. Tom backed off and walked away.

This phrasal verb is often used in the imperative. (E.g.1)
